Time ticked by slowly while Castor and De’ara waited in Mia’s hut. Any minute now, Yoshina and Mia would be here, and then it was time to enact the plan. He twirled the laser blade distractedly.

Timid turquoise eyes tracked his movements. It didn’t take a psychic to tell De’ara was scared. A little bit of her fear was directed at him. He was aware Throl was her ex-lover before he’d decided to put her in the pits. A few faint scars crisscrossed her skin. Castor wondered if she’d gotten them before or after becoming a fighter.

“We’re going to be successful. Don’t worry,” he said in an attempt to soothe her and show he was friendly.

She smiled timidly. “I fervently wish it so.”

“You want this?” He held out the knife and she took it gingerly. “I don’t really need it.” He extended one of his claws, and De’ara’s eyes grew wide. She shrunk a little, and Castor cursed himself. “Sorry.” He retracted his claw. “Back to normal.” He wiggled his fingers.

De’ara relaxed a little. “You care about Mia.”

“I do.” What an understatement.

“Be careful. She’s . . . Mia has endured a lot. Her emotions are raw.”

“I will.” He wasn’t a fool. Mia was suffering from some serious emotional damage. He needed to tread carefully. She was fragile . . . emotionally. Physically, an army wouldn’t be able to best Mia if her mind was set on winning.

The door of the hut whooshed open, and the woman herself walked into the room. She was already pulling the sleeves of the dress she wore to the party off. There was a dark stain on it. Castor’s heart raced for a second until he determined Mia wasn’t hurt.

“It’s insane up there. Getting the codes was a piece of cake. I got away as quickly as I could. Throl expected me back, but I excused myself to change out of this disaster. We have to go now and quickly. Where’s Yoshina?” Mia looked between Castor and De’ara.

“Not here yet,” Castor said.

Turning her back on Castor and De’ara, she slid the dress down. Castor turned his head, trying to ignore the fact that his very desirable soulmate was disrobing in front of him. Another dress shot out of the wall with a pop. Mia ignored it and picked up a discarded practice suit she’d swiped from the bathhouse earlier. “She needs to hurry up. Now is a perfect time. I won’t be missed if we leave now. Slipping off later might be difficult.”

“Why?” Castor asked.

“Because our fight generated a lot of interest. Everyone wants to know where you are. Throl is considering sedating you and bringing you up.” She pulled on her suit.

Mia started pacing. De’ara shifted uncomfortably, Mia’s agitation wearing off on her. This wouldn’t do. Castor grabbed Mia’s shoulders gently but firmly, ignoring the current that passed between them. A look of pleasure flitted across Mia’s face at the contact. Would it always be like this? Castor was beginning to understand why his family suppressed their soul bonds—being affected like this just by casual touch .
